India becomes world's fifth-largest military spender

  • India's military expenditure grew around 8.5 per cent in 2016, making it the world's fifth largest spender at $55.9 billion, figures released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri).
  • As per the figures, the US remains the world's largest military spender registering a growth of 1.7 per cent between 2015 and 2016 to $611 billion.
  • China is second on the list spending $215 billion, an increase of 5.4 per cent.
    Russia increased its spending by 5.9 per cent to $69.2 billion, making it the third largest spender.
  • Saudi Arabia, the third largest spender in 2015, dropped to the fourth position in 2016.

India, Mongolia begin joint military exercise 'Nomadic Elephant'

  • India and Mongolia have commenced a joint military training exercise called "Nomadic Elephant -2016" in Mongolia.
  • The Indian Army sent platoon-strength soldiers of the Kumaon Regiment to the 11th Indo-Mongolia exercise.
  • The exercise will be inclusive of the specialised operations in counter insurgency and counter terrorism setting.
  • The Indian Army contingent will also be accompanied by two observers.
  • Both the armies will participate in sporting events and be sharing techniques gained in unarmed combat and specialised rappelling.
  • The joint military exercise "Nomadic Elephant -2016" is expected to end on May 8.

India Signs Mega Missile Deal With Israel For 2 Billion Dollars

  • India has signed a weapons deal with Israel for nearly $2 billion in what's being described as the "largest defence contract" ever signed by the military exporting giant.
  • The deal will provide India with an advanced defence system of medium-range surface-to-air missiles, launchers and communications technology.
  • The "mega" missile agreement is "considered to be the largest defense contract in Israel's defense industries' history some components will be assembled in India, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push to reduce reliance on costly imports.
  • The Israeli firm will also supply a naval defence system including long-range surface-to-air missiles for India's first aircraft carrier, which is still under construction.
  • India - the world's largest defence importer - has been investing tens of billions in updating its Soviet-era military hardware to counter regional rivals China and Pakistan.
  • Israel is a top weapons exporter, with sales last year surging to $ 6.5 billion. India is a top market for its arms, as New Delhi has turned increasingly away from traditional ally Russia for its military hardware.

Indian Navy gets new weather monitoring system

  • Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba unveiled an integrated aviation meteorological system which is expected to bring accuracy in weather monitoring mechanism in the Indian Navy.
  • The Integrated Automatic Aviation Meteorological System (IAAMS) was launched at Rajali Air Station in Tamil Nadu.
  • The aim of IAAMS is to modernise the meteorological infrastructure of the nine Naval Air Stations (NAS).
  • Equipped with the state-of-the-art meteorological sensors, IAAMS undertakes automatic and continuous recording of relevant weather parameters that are vital for accurate weather forecasting.
  • It has a special alarm feature that alerts the duty staff during abnormal change of weather parameters that may affect safe flying operations.
  • The system can also provide automatic dissemination of routine weather reports as per standards followed by the World Meteorological Organisation to other air stations and Air Traffic Controller towers without human intervention.

Government approves Shekatkar Committee recommendations to reform military

  • The Union Defence Ministry has approved most of the proposals of a committee of experts, headed by Lt. Gen. D.B. Shekatkar (Retd) to bring host of reforms in the military and improve financial management.
  • Around 90 recommendations have been of the committee were approved. Most of these recommendations are measures to increase coordination among the three Services and cut down flab in Army to make it lean and agile.
  • Some recommendations of Committee are given below ;
    1. Roll-on defence budget must have enough capital expenditure available for modernisation. It must be against the present practice of surrendering unspent capital budget at the end of each financial year.
    2. It must be conducted of non-combat organisations under the Defence Ministry.

    Director- General of Quality Assurance, Ordnance Factory Board (OFB),
    Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and
    National Cadet Corps (NCC).
  • Downsizing or rationalisation of manpower: It will lead to significant savings.

  • Reduce deployment of active-duty soldiers in avoidable postings: They will be replaced by retired officers and jawans in the running of NCC.

BSF gets first woman field officer in Tanushree Pareek

  • The Border Security Force on Saturday received its first woman field officer after a convocation ceremony conducted in the BSF academy at Tekanpur in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior.
  • Tanushree Pareek, a resident of Rajasthan, led the passing-out parade at the BSF Academy as the first woman field officer.
  • She was also felicitated at the ceremony.

Coast Guard ship Ayush commissioned

Indian Navy launches search to procure 57 carrier-borne fighter jets

  • The Indian Navy has launched a Request for Information to procure 57 multi-role combat aircraft for its carrier.
  • Last month, Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba had said the “present LCA does not meet the carrier capability required by the Navy”.
  • He had said the service would continue to support its development but “at the same time we will seek aircraft elsewhere which can operate on the aircraft carrier”.
  • At present, the Navy operates 45 MIG-29K jets, which from time-to-time face serviceability issues.
  • Currently, six planes are compatible for aircraft carrier flying.
  • They are;
    1. Rafale (Dassault, France),
    2. F-18 Super Hornet (Boeing, US),
    3. MIG-29K (Russia),
    4. F-35B and F-35C (Lockheed Martin, US) and
    5. Gripen (Saab, Sweden).
  • While F-18, Rafale and MIG-29K are twin engine jets, the remaining three have single engine.

Navy’s Theatre Level Exercise, TROPEX 17, gets underway

  • The Indian Navy’s Annual Theatre Readiness Operational Exercise (TROPEX) got underway on 24 Jan 17.
  • The month long exercise will have ships and aircraft of both the Western and Eastern NavalCommands, as also assets from;
    1. the Indian Air Force,
    2. Indian Army and
    3.the Indian Coast Guard
    exercising together.
  • The exercise is being conducted off the Western Seaboard.
  • The last edition of the exercise was conducted in January 2015.
  • TROPEX has grown in scale and complexity over the years and will see participation of major surface combatants and air assets of the Indian Navy including ;
    1. the aircraft carrier Vikramaditya,
    2. nuclear submarine Chakra,
    3. Landing Platform Dock (LPD) Jalashwa,
    4. the recently commissioned destroyer Chennai,
    5. the P-8I long range maritime reconnaissance and
    6. anti-submarine warfare aircraft operating alongside SU-30 MKI, Jaguars, AWACS, IL-78 Flight Refuelling Aircraft of the Indian Air Force and Infantry units of the Indian Army.
  • The exercise will be conducted in various phases, both in harbour and at sea encompassing the various facets of war-fighting and combat operations.
  • TROPEX 17 assumes special significance in the backdrop of the current security scenario.
  • The exercise is aimed at testing combat readiness of the combined fleets of the Indian Navy, and the assets of the Indian Air Force, Indian Army and the Indian Coast Guard.
  • It will also strengthen inter-operability and joint operations in a complex environment.
