Coast Guard ship Ayush commissioned


  • Adding to the growing strength of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), vice admiral A R Karve, flag officer commanding-in-chief, Southern Naval Command, commissioned CGS Ayush, the final vessel in the series of twenty fast patrol vessels (FPVs) designed and built by the Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL).
  • The ship will be under command of Commandant Asheesh Sharma and will be under operational control of the commander, Coast Guard region (east), Chennai.
  • The 50-m-long ship having a maximum speed of 33 knots was delivered to the CG on December 30, 2016, almost three months ahead of contractual schedule.

Indian Navy Inducts First All-women Global Circumnavigation Vessel 'Tarini'


  • The Indian Navy's second sailboat 'Tarini' was inducted into service.
  • The vessel is slated to be the platform for the first Indian all-women global circumnavigation by the Indian Navy to begin in August.
  • The sailboat Tarini is being inducted into the Navy and is slated to be the platform for First Indian All-Women Circumnavigation of the globe expedition of the Indian Navy,
    Extensive trials of the newly-built vessel were successfully completed in January.
  • The boat is skippered by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi and crew members including ;
    1. Lieutenant Commander Pratibha Jamwal,
    2. Lieutenant Aishwarya Boddapati,
    3. Lieutenant Patarapalli Swathi,
    4. Lieutenant Sh Vijaya Devi and

Indian Navy launches search to procure 57 carrier-borne fighter jets


  • The Indian Navy has launched a Request for Information to procure 57 multi-role combat aircraft for its carrier.
  • Last month, Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba had said the “present LCA does not meet the carrier capability required by the Navy”.
  • He had said the service would continue to support its development but “at the same time we will seek aircraft elsewhere which can operate on the aircraft carrier”.
  • At present, the Navy operates 45 MIG-29K jets, which from time-to-time face serviceability issues.
  • Currently, six planes are compatible for aircraft carrier flying.
  • They are;
    1. Rafale (Dassault, France),
    2. F-18 Super Hornet (Boeing, US),
    3. MIG-29K (Russia),
    4. F-35B and F-35C (Lockheed Martin, US) and
    5. Gripen (Saab, Sweden).
  • While F-18, Rafale and MIG-29K are twin engine jets, the remaining three have single engine.

Navy’s Theatre Level Exercise, TROPEX 17, gets underway


  • The Indian Navy’s Annual Theatre Readiness Operational Exercise (TROPEX) got underway on 24 Jan 17.
  • The month long exercise will have ships and aircraft of both the Western and Eastern NavalCommands, as also assets from;
    1. the Indian Air Force,
    2. Indian Army and
    3.the Indian Coast Guard
    exercising together.
  • The exercise is being conducted off the Western Seaboard.
  • The last edition of the exercise was conducted in January 2015.
  • TROPEX has grown in scale and complexity over the years and will see participation of major surface combatants and air assets of the Indian Navy including ;
    1. the aircraft carrier Vikramaditya,
    2. nuclear submarine Chakra,
    3. Landing Platform Dock (LPD) Jalashwa,
    4. the recently commissioned destroyer Chennai,
    5. the P-8I long range maritime reconnaissance and
    6. anti-submarine warfare aircraft operating alongside SU-30 MKI, Jaguars, AWACS, IL-78 Flight Refuelling Aircraft of the Indian Air Force and Infantry units of the Indian Army.
  • The exercise will be conducted in various phases, both in harbour and at sea encompassing the various facets of war-fighting and combat operations.
  • TROPEX 17 assumes special significance in the backdrop of the current security scenario.
  • The exercise is aimed at testing combat readiness of the combined fleets of the Indian Navy, and the assets of the Indian Air Force, Indian Army and the Indian Coast Guard.
  • It will also strengthen inter-operability and joint operations in a complex environment.

NSG commandos debut at Republic Day parade


  • In a first, ‘black cat’ commandos of elite counter-terror force National Security Guard (NSG) participated in the Republic Day parade at Rajpath in New Delhi.
  • A contingent of about 140 personnel in;
    1. black overalls,
    2. balaclava headgear and
    3.carrying special assault rifle MP-5 added dashing sheen to the parade.
  • The commandos were given a rapturous round of applause by the spectators as they marched down Rajpath singing the NSG song “Hum haina haina hindustan” penned by renowned poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar.
  • The march past by the NSG also displayed ‘Sherpa’—a specially designed hijack intervention vehicle and two gypsies used for anti-hijack operations.
  • The NSG, which selects the best of the officers and men from the Indian Army as well as from various central armed police forces, was raised in 1984.

India signs ₹5,000-cr deal to buy M777 Howitzer guns from US


  • India on Wednesday signed a ₹5,000-crore deal with the US to buy 145 M777 lightweight Howitzer guns for the Army.
