US approves sale of 22 Guardian drones to India for the Indian Navy.

  • The US has cleared the sale of 22 unmanned Guardian drones to India a deal being termed as a “game changer” ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington for his maiden meeting with President Donald Trump.
  • The deal, estimated to be worth $2to 3 billion, has been approved by the State Department.
  • The designation of India being a “major defence partner” was decided by the previous Obama Administration, and formally approved by the Congress.

India’s First Indigenously Built Floating Dock FDN-2 launched at the L&T Shipbuilding Yard at Kattupalli near Chennai goes on stream.

  • The country’s first indigenously built floating dock FDN-2 for the Indian Navy, was formally launched at the L&T Shipbuilding Yard at Kattupalli near Chennai.
  • The floating dock, awarded to Larsen and Toubro by the Ministry of Defence in May 2015, was to design and build at an order value of Rs. 468 crore.

Lockheed Martin Signs Pact With Tata to Make F-16 Fighter Jets in India

  • US-based aerospace and defense manufacturing firm Lockheed Martin announced on Monday that it will partner with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) to manufacture and export the F-16 Block 70 aircraft from India.
  • The F-16 Block 70 is ideally suited to meet the Indian Air Force’s single-engine fighter needs and this unmatched U.S.-Indian industry partnership directly supports India’s initiative to develop private aerospace and defense manufacturing capacity in India.

Indian Army to receive first batch of modern artillery guns

  • Two of the 145 M-777 ultra-light howitzers will arrive in India from the US on Friday. It will be the first induction of the howitzers after the Bofors scandal broke out nearly 30 years ago.

‘Invisible’ laser walls to bolster security along border with Pakistan in J-K

  • The Border Security Force (BSF) is all set to get more teeth to man the 198 km India-Pakistan international border using a newly developed technology that can detect intrusions and relay information immediately to the nearest post for action.
  • Developed by Delhi-based defence IoT firm, CRON Systems, the made-in-India technology is called Kavach (KVx) series laser walls and is a notch higher than the existing laser walls.

India becomes world’s fifth-largest military spender

  • India’s military expenditure grew around 8.5 per cent in 2016, making it the world’s fifth largest spender at $55.9 billion, figures released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri).
  • As per the figures, the US remains the world’s largest military spender registering a growth of 1.7 per cent between 2015 and 2016 to $611 billion.
  • China is second on the list spending $215 billion, an increase of 5.4 per cent.
    Russia increased its spending by 5.9 per cent to $69.2 billion, making it the third largest spender.
  • Saudi Arabia, the third largest spender in 2015, dropped to the fourth position in 2016.

India Signs Mega Missile Deal With Israel For 2 Billion Dollars

  • India has signed a weapons deal with Israel for nearly $2 billion in what’s being described as the “largest defence contract” ever signed by the military exporting giant.
  • The deal will provide India with an advanced defence system of medium-range surface-to-air missiles, launchers and communications technology.
  • The “mega” missile agreement is “considered to be the largest defense contract in Israel’s defense industries’ history some components will be assembled in India, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push to reduce reliance on costly imports.
  • The Israeli firm will also supply a naval defence system including long-range surface-to-air missiles for India’s first aircraft carrier, which is still under construction.
  • India – the world’s largest defence importer – has been investing tens of billions in updating its Soviet-era military hardware to counter regional rivals China and Pakistan.

Indian Navy gets new weather monitoring system

  • Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba unveiled an integrated aviation meteorological system which is expected to bring accuracy in weather monitoring mechanism in the Indian Navy.
  • The Integrated Automatic Aviation Meteorological System (IAAMS) was launched at Rajali Air Station in Tamil Nadu.
  • The aim of IAAMS is to modernise the meteorological infrastructure of the nine Naval Air Stations (NAS).
  • Equipped with the state-of-the-art meteorological sensors, IAAMS undertakes automatic and continuous recording of relevant weather parameters that are vital for accurate weather forecasting.
  • It has a special alarm feature that alerts the duty staff during abnormal change of weather parameters that may affect safe flying operations.
  • The system can also provide automatic dissemination of routine weather reports as per standards followed by the World Meteorological Organisation to other air stations and Air Traffic Controller towers without human intervention.

Government approves Shekatkar Committee recommendations to reform military

  • The Union Defence Ministry has approved most of the proposals of a committee of experts, headed by Lt. Gen. D.B. Shekatkar (Retd) to bring host of reforms in the military and improve financial management.
  • Around 90 recommendations have been of the committee were approved. Most of these recommendations are measures to increase coordination among the three Services and cut down flab in Army to make it lean and agile.

    2. It must be conducted of non-combat organisations under the Defence Ministry.

    Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and
    National Cadet Corps (NCC).

  • Reduce deployment of active-duty soldiers in avoidable postings: They will be replaced by retired officers and jawans in the running of NCC.

BSF gets first woman field officer in Tanushree Pareek

Coast Guard ship Ayush commissioned
