Major Mitali Madhumita is the first woman officer to receive a gallantry award in the Army.
She was honoured along with 21 Army personnel for acts of bravery and distinguished service at the military station here during the South Western Command Investiture Ceremony.

Sepoy Jagtar Singh of the Punjab Regiment was awarded the Sena Medal (Gallantry) posthumously
Sepoy Purna Limboo was also awarded the Sena Medal (Gallantry) for displaying exemplary courage during a search operation in Kulgam.

Former India Hockey captain Sardar Singh and Paralympian javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia have been selected to be awarded the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards.
The awards selection committee has recommended both Jhajharia and Sardar to be considered for the award jointly.
With this, the 36-year old Jhajharia becomes the first Paralympian to be recommended for the country’s highest sporting honour. Jhajharia is also the first Indian to have won two Paralympic gold medals in the javelin throw event.
He is one of modern hockey’s finest defensive mid-fielders ever, leading India to two successive silver medal finishes in the Commonwealth Games. He was also awarded the Arjuna Award in 2012.

This is the first time any expatriate community member has been given this prestigious award.
Veteran actor and national award winner Sharada has been selected for this year’s Prem Nazir Award
Sharada had won three national awards with the first being for her performance in 1968 tragedy film ‘Thulabharam’. She also won the award for Swayamvaram (1972, Malayalam) and Nimajjanam (1978, Telugu).
Prem Nazir won his only Kerala State Film Award in 1981; he won a Special Jury Award for the supporting role he played in the film Vida Parayum Munbe.
He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1983 by the President of India in recognition of distinguished services of a high order to the nation in his field (acting).

A photograph of an erupting volcano hit by a bolt of lightning has earned Sergio Tapiro Velasco of Mexico the prestigious title of 2017National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year.
Velasco will receive a 10-day trip for two to the Galápagos Archipelago with National Geographic Expeditions, as well as a $2500 prize. Velasco’s incredible photo was selected from over 15,000 entries from participants in more than 30 countries.

Seven Indian companies have made it to the latest Fortune 500 list of the world’s biggest corporations in terms of revenue, with the retail giant Walmart topping the global rankings
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is ranked highest at 161st among Indian firms, while another state-run firm Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has moved out of the rankings for 2016. Private gems and jewellery major Rajesh Exports has made its debut at 423rd position.
Among the seven Indian companies, four are from the public sector while Reliance Industries (RIL) is the top-ranked among private sector firms, followed by Tata Motors and Rajesh Exports.
Among state-run majors, IOC is followed by banking behemoth State Bank of India, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum.

Advani gets Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions in Lok Sabha
Veteran BJP leader L.K. Advani received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions as a parliamentarian in the Lok Sabha.
JD-U leader Sharad Yadav also received the Lifetime Achievement Award as a Rajya Sabha representative from Vice President Hamid Ansari at a function organised by the Lokmat Media Group to honour distinguished Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members.

Leading oil marketing company Indian Oil has bagged the WPC Excellence Award for its innovative and ground-breaking INDMAX technology at 22nd edition of the World Petroleum Congress in Istanbul.
