UK’s first woman Sikh MP Preet Kaur Gill elected to key Parliament panel that examines the workings of the Home Office
Britain’s first woman Sikh MP Preet Kaur Gill has been elected to an influential cross-party panel in the UK Parliament that examines the workings of the Home Office.
Gill, who won the Edgbaston seat for the Labour party in the June 8 snap general election, was elected to the Home Affairs Select Committee in the UK Parliament.
The House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee was chaired by Keith Vaz, Britain’s longest-serving Indian-origin MP, until he stepped down from the post last year. Its newly-elected chair is Labour party MP Yvette Cooper, elected unopposed to the post last week.

Professor Subra Suresh, a distinguished alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology Madras and a native of Chennai, has been chosen as the fourth President of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.
Prof. Suresh will begin his presidency on 1 January 2018, when the current President Prof. Andersson retires.
Senior bureaucrat John Joseph and three other officials have been appointed as members in the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC).
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved appointment of Sushant Kumar Panda, Ameeta Suri, Pranab Kumar Das and Joseph as the new members.
All of them are officers of Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise). They are working in different departments of the CBEC, the apex policy-making body for indirect taxes. Joseph was recently appointed as chief of Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence.
Vistara named Leslie Thng as its new chief executive officer who will take charge in October
Leslie Thng would replace Phee Teik Yeoh, who has been steering Vistara since its establishment more than two years ago.
Vistara — a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines — began operations in January 2015.
The board of Vistara and the airline’s two promoters — Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines — as part of the plan, named Leslie Thng to succeed Phee Teik Yeoh as chief executive officer effective October 2017, a release said.

Ned Segal, a longtime Goldman Sachs banker and the former Senior Vice President of Finance at Silicon Valley’s financial software company Intuit, has been appointed as the new Chief Financial Officer at Twitter.
Segal will take over the CFO role from Anthony Noto, who was promoted to COO post last November.
Segal will report directly to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

As WHO Goodwill Ambassador, Saima will be promoting the Thimphu Declaration which also emphasises integrating the needs of autism-affected people into national health and socioeconomic development plans.
The declaration calls for a whole-of-society and whole-of-government approach, with a focus on strengthening national capacities in health, education and social care sectors to provide effective services and support to people with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Handas appointment as non-official director/non-executive chairman of the bank, an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said, without citing any details about him.

N Chandrasekaran appointed as chairman of Tata Global Beverages
Tata Global Beverages has appointed Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran as chairman of its Board with immediate effect.
Chandrasekaran also chairs the Boards of several group operating companies, including Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power, Indian Hotels and Tata Consultancy Services, of which he was CEO from 2009-17.
