 Exercise 3.3

1. In which quadrant or on which axis do each of the points
(- 2, 4), (3, – 1), (- 1, 0), (1, 2) and (- 3, – 5) lie?
Verify your answer by locating them on the Cartesian plane.

Show Answer

Sol. (- 2, 4), i.e., (-, +)  ⇒ The point lies in 2nd quadrant.
(3, – 1), i.e., (+, -) ⇒ The point lies in 4th quadrant.
(- 1, 0), i.e., (-, 0) ⇒ The point lies on the – ve x-axis.
(1, 2), i.e., (+, +) ⇒ The point lies in 1st quadrant.
(- 3,- 5), i.e., (-, -) ⇒ The point lies in 3rd quadrant.
The points are shown in the Cartesian plane given below:

2. Plot the points (x, y) given in the following table on the plane, choosing suitable units of distance on the axes.

X-2-1013
Y87-1.253-1

Show Answer

Sol.

xy(x,y)
-28(-2,8)
-17(-1,7)
0-1.25(0,-1.25)
13(1,3)
3-1(3,-1)
