India became an Associate Member State of EMBO
The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, India signed a Cooperation Agreement to acquire the status of the Associate Member State European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).
The agreement will strengthen scientific interaction and collaborative research between India and Europe in this field.
First petro-chemical project in the North-East
On 5 February 2016 Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) at Lepetkata, Assam.
The cost of this plant will be rupees 10,000 crore. It is the first petro-chemical project in the North-East India and it will make raw material for manufacturing plastic.
The Prime Minister also inaugurated India’s highest wax producing unit using indigenous technology in Numaligarh Refinery Limited.
12th South Asian Games inaugurated in Guwahati
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 5 February 2016 declared the 12th South Asian Games 2016 open at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium in Guwahati, Assam.
Modi in his speech said that the South Asian Games demonstrate Team Work, Togetherness and Talent referred as 3-T’s
Over 2500 athletes from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives will be part of the games that will be co-hosted by Meghalaya Capital, Shillong.
Games slogan is ‘Play for Peace, Progress and Prosperity’.
Tikhor, a one-horned rhino that represents endangered species found in Kaziranga National Park, Assam is the official mascot of the event.
Sixth man to walk on the Moon, passed away
NASA Astronaut Edgar Mitchell, who was the sixth man to walk on the Moon, died on 4 February 2016 in West Palm Beach, Florida. The lunar module pilot on Apollo 14 died at the age of 85.
His death occurred on the eve of the 45th anniversary of his lunar landing, which took place on 5 February 1971.
Mahindra Finance received SEBI approval for Mahindra Mutual Fund
Mahindra Finance applied for a mutual fund license to Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on 30 December 2008.
On 4 February 2016 Mahindra Asset Management Company which is a subsidiary of Mahindra Finance, received SEBI’s approval to manage the Mahindra Mutual Fund.
Union Government to set up National Organic Farming Research Institute in Sikkim
On 5th February 2016 the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare declared to set up the National Organic Farming Research Institute in Sikkim.
The institute will be established by upgrading the existing Regional Centre of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in Gangtok.
Sikkim was declared as the first organic farming State in the country in January 2016 by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Heritage development projects for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
Union Ministry of Urban Development on 5 February 2016 approved projects worth over 12 crore rupees for improving tourist infrastructure in heritage places of Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh and Warangal in Telangana.
State of disaster declared in Zimbabwe
Rural pat of the Zimbabwe has been hit by a drought. Due to this on 5 February 2016 Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe declared a state of disaster in rural parts of the country.
This declaration of disaster will allow international donors to raise money quickly to provide food aid to the nation.
It is the worst drought in past 25 years. South Africa, Namibia and Botswana have also been badly hit.
Inauguration of The Rise of Digital India exhibition in Sri-Lanka
On 6 February 2016 External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj inaugurated the Rise of Digital India Exhibition in Colombo, capital of Sri-Lanka.
The exhibition was a part of Sangam -The Festival of India in Sri Lanka 2015-16. This festival is celebrated for six months in Sri Lanka.
The Rise of Digital India exhibition showcases the initiative of Indian government to take the benefits of Information Technology to the common man.

First Sino-India 2016 military exercise
India and China on 6 February 2016 held first joint tactical military exercise Sino-India 2016.
The one-day long exercise was held in Chusul-Moldo area that is located along the Line of Actual Control (LoAC) in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir.
MGNREGA completed its 10 years
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005 completed ten years of implementation on 2nd February 2016.
Under the Act, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme was launched with the objective of providing at least 100 days of employment in rural areas across the country.
She-Taxi initiative received Chief Minister’s Award for Innovation
She-Taxi is the India’s first 24×7 taxi network by women for women. It was launched by the Gender Park which was an autonomous institution under the state Social Justice Department in 2014.
On 3 February 2016 received the prestigious Chief Minister’s Award for Innovation in Public Policy 2014 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It was selected for the recognition in the developmental interventions category.
Bharat Biotech claims first vaccine for cure of Zika Virus
Indian biotechnology company Bharat Biotech on 3 February 2016 claimed that it has developed two vaccines to fight the mosquito-borne Zika virus.
The company is the first in the world to file for global patent for the two vaccines.
Zika virus has been in news from past few months. It has become a widespread threat.
De-radicalization Programme for the minority community launched in Maharashtra
The Programme was launched to face the challenges of both home-grown extremism and global Islamic State (IS) threat.
As per this Programme:
– Vyayam shalas will be opened in minority areas.
– National Cadet Corps (NCC), Bharat Scouts and Guides (BS&G) will be made compulsory in the minority schools
– The State Education Department will launch a mid-day meal scheme in Urdu schools
– Provide textbooks at subsidized rates, and teach Urdu as optional subject in 300 Marathi schools
– Plans to teach religious texts from all sects in minority schools
India to participate in Cobra Gold 2016 military exercise in Thailand
Cobra Gold is the largest Asia-Pacific military exercise. It is held in Thailand every year.
On 3 February 2016, India confirmed its participation in the exercise.

Pandit Ram Narayan selected for Bhimsen Joshi Award
On 3rd February 2016 Sarangi player Pandit Ram Narayan was selected for the prestigious Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Classical Music Award for 2015-2016.
The Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Classical Music Award is an annual award. It is instituted by the Maharashtra Government. It is given to individuals who have excelled in classical vocal or instrumental music.
Manipuri documentary Phum-Shang won Golden Conch Award
The award was given at the 14th Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Animation and Short Films (MIFF 2016). The film is directed by Haobam Paban Kumar.
The 52-minute film critically examines the serious environmental problems faced by the Loktak lake, the largest freshwater lake in northeast India. The lake is characterised by its unique floating biomass, known as Phumdi, which is the primary source of livelihood for fishermen who live on huts built on the Phumdis.

On 3rd February 2016, Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology(CIPET) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Karnataka Government. According to this MOU CIPET will set up Advanced Polymer Design and Development Research Laboratory cum High Learning Centre at Bengaluru. CIPET comes under the Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers

Miniratna Category-1 Status granted to Hospital Services Consultancy Corporation (India) Ltd
The honour was given to its CMD Gyanesh Pandey at Nirman Bhawan in New Delhi by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda on 1st February.
Miniratna is a title given to companies by Government of India.
Miniratna is divided in two catergories – 1 and 2.
A company may get status of category 1 or 2 depende on following criteria-
Miniratna Category-1: Company must have made profits continuously for the last three years or earned a net profit of Rs. 30 crore or more in one of the three years.
Miniratna Category-2:Have made profits for the last three years continuously and should have a positive net worth.
HSSC is a Public Sector Enterprise under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It attained the Miniratna-II status in 2002. Now it has earned status of miniratna category-2.
France banned supermarket food waste
On 3 February 2016 the French Senate passed a law to ban large food stores from throwing away food that is approaching its expiration date. Now the supermarkets are bound to donate this food to charities and food banks.
France has become first country to take such action.
Union Government to set up a BGRL to understand earthquake mechanism in Koyna region
Dr Harsh Vardhan, the Union Minister for Science, Technology and Earth Sciences on 2 February 2016 inaugurated the construction work of Borehole Geophysics Research Laboratory (BGRL) at Hazarmachi, Karad of Maharashtra.
BGRL is being developed at Karad to understand and address the challenges of the seismological problems (natural calamities) of societal relevance in the Koyna Region through drilling investigation.
Russia-India High Technology Private Equity Fund to be set up
National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) Ltd. on 2 February 2016 signed a Memorandum of Understanding with RUSNANO OJSC of Russia. The MoU was to set-up Russia-India High Technology Private Equity Fund for joint implementation of investments into projects in India
The two parties agreed to cooperate in diverse sectors and facilitate high-technology investments in India.
Former RBI Deputy Governor S S Tarapore passed away
He passed away on 2 February 2016 in Mumbai at the age of 80 years. Tarapore was mostly known for his strong views on issues, ranging from inflation to capital account convertibility.
