On 10 February 2016 India observed the first National Deworming Day in schools and preschools (anganwadis).

The day is observed to combat parasitic worm infections among preschool (anganwadi) and school-age children.

Albendezole 400 mg chewable tablets are being provided to children at government, government-aided, private schools, and anganwadis.

The albendazole tablets will be given free-of-cost to children.

Sikkim Government to construct Mini Sikkim

On 9 February 2016 Sikkim’s Chief Minister Pawan Chamling announced to construct a ‘Mini Sikkim’, which will showcase the state’s diverse and rich culture.

The ‘Mini Sikkim’ will be constructed under the Namthang Ratheypani constituency in South Sikkim district.

This new project will consist of traditional houses of fifteen ethnic communities of Sikkim. Traditional museums will also be put in place.

580 crore rupees sanctioned for constructing railway track


On 10 February 2016 the Union Government sanctioned 580 crore rupees for constructing railway track to connect Kolkata & Tripura via Bangladesh.

15-kilometer railway track will be constructed between Kolkata and Tripura.

The Agartala-Akhaura rail-link between Indian Railway and Bangladesh Railway will reduce the road distance from 1700km to 350 km.

This is the highest rank project on Prime Minister's 'Act East’ Policy.

On 8 February 2016 Central Statistics Office (CSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the Advance Estimates (AE) of National Income for the financial year (FY) 2015-16.

It also released the Quarterly Estimates (QE) of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the third quarter (Q3) of the FY 2015-16.

Rajendra K Pachauri appointed as Executive Vice Chairman of The Energy and Resources Institute


Former Director General of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) Rajendra Kumar Pachauri on 8 February 2016 was appointed as the Executive Vice-Chairman of the organisation.
The Energy and Resources Institute was established in 1974. It was formerly known as Tata Energy Research Institute. It is located at New Delhi. TERI conducts research work in the fields of energy, environment and sustainable development.

Union Government signed MOU with Chhattisgarh


Union Railway Ministry on 9 February 2016 signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chhattisgarh Government for formation of Joint Venture Companies for development of railway infrastructure in the state.

The Joint Ventures with states for focused project development, resource mobilization, land acquisition, project implementation and monitoring of critical rail projects.

Prime Minister Shram Awards 2014 announced


The Prime Minister's Shram Awards were instituted in 1985 by the Government of India. This national award is conferred on workers for outstanding contributions that improve productivity, innovation, and indigenization (means making in India). The award is also given for long-term exceptional dedicated work.

They are four types of awards:

Shram Ratna, Shram Bhushan, Shram Vir / Shram Veerangana, Shram Devi / Shram Shree.

Directorate General of Civil Aviation and United States Technical Development Agency signed an agreement


On 9 February 2016, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and United States Technical Development Agency (USTDA) signed the grant agreement for India Aviation Safety Technical Assistance Phase II in New Delhi.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) had raised certain safety concerns about Indian aviation in its 2012 audit. Following this the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of USA carried out an International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) audit in September 2013 and a review in December 2013.

Royal Navy of UK to study India’s Operation Raahat


Operation Raahat was an operation of the Indian Armed Forces to evacuate Indian citizens and other foreign nationals from Yemen during the 2015 military intervention by Saudi Arabia and its allies in that country during the Yemeni Crisis.

The Royal Navy of United Kingdom expressed its desire to officially study India’s humanitarian rescue operation in Yemen.

Chettinad cotton saree won India Handloom tag


The Chettinad cotton saree, which inherited the century-old‘Kandangi’ pure silk sarees, has won the ‘India Handloom’ tag for its unique designs and identity.

The Textiles Committee, Union Ministry of Handlooms and Textiles, Mumbai, registered the Chettinad cotton saree under the India Handloom Brand Scheme after checking various quality parameters stipulated by the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and offered a logo.

Urdu poet Nida Fazli passed away


Urdu Poet and Bollywood lyricist Nida Fazli died due to heart attack in Mumbai on 8 February 2016. He was 78.

His most famous works include Duniya jise kehte hain jaadu kaa khilona hai, Mil jaaye to mitti hai, kho jaaye to sona hai. Few popular film songs written by him are Aa bhi jaa (movie: Sur), Tu is tarah se meri zindagi mein (movie: Aap To Aise Na The) and Hosh waalon ko khabar (movie: Sarfarosh).

New Zealand cricketer Brendon Barrie McCullum retired from One-Day Internationals


He announced his retirement on 22 December 2015 and he took retirement on 8 February 2016.

He was the captain for the New Zealand side in 2015 ICC Cricket World cup final which was won by Australia.

He played 260 ODIs and scored 6083 runs matches. They include 5 centuries and 31 half-centauries.

He was honored as ICC Twenty20 International Performance of the Year in 2010 and in year 2015 he won ICC Spirit of Cricket Award in 2015.

24x7 Toll Free National and International Tourist Infoline


On 8 February 2016 Union government launched the 24x7 Toll Free Tourist Infoline.

This Infoline service will provide information relating to Travel and Tourism in India to the domestic and International tourists or visitors.

The services will be available in 12 International Languages. These languages are English, Hindi, Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

This project is being implemented by the Union Ministry of Tourism through M/s TATA BSS.

It will also assist the callers with advice on action to be taken during times of distress while travelling in India.

North Korea launched Kwangmyongsong-4 satellite


On 7 February 2016 North Korea’s National Aerospace Development Administration (NADA) launched the Kwangmyongsong-4 satellite.

The satellite was launched on-board the Kwangmyongsong rocket. It was launched from the Sohae Space Center in Cholsan County, North Phyongan Province.

It is an earth observation satellite. The satellite was named after late leader Kim Jong Il who is the father of the present leader Kim Jong Un.

The launch attracted wide spread criticism from the UN and other major powers. It was also criticized by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), in an emergency meeting on 7 February 2016. UNSC is terming it as a missile test.

Floating hills on Pluto


 

On 4 February 2016 NASA's press release announced that NASA’s New Horizons mission on 14 July 2015 spotted the nitrogen ice glaciers on Pluto. It appeared to carry numerous isolated hills which are likely to be the fragments of water ice.

It is believed that newly found water ice hills are floating in a sea of frozen nitrogen and resembles icebergs in Earth’s Arctic Ocean. These hills individually measure one to several miles or kilometers across.
