MoU approved on Technical Cooperation between India and Bhutan


On 20 April 2016 the Union Cabinet gave its approval for signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhutan.

The two nations will ink an agreement on technical cooperation in the field of capacity building, benchmarking and bilateral exchange in infrastructure engineering.

The decision was taken at a Union Cabinet meet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

Through this MoU, the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) will stand to gain in terms of experience in hills road construction which is of paramount importance in J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and various States of North-East Region.

The MoU will take forward India-Bhutan friendship treaty and provide an umbrella for scientific, educational and technical research and environment protection.

Justice PK Mishra appointed as Lokayukta of Goa


On 20 April 2016 Justice PK Mishra, former Chief Justice of Patna High Court, was appointed as the Lokayukta of Goa. The decision in this regard was taken by the state government.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar after state government obtained the concurrence of the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court and the Leader of Opposition as provided under section 3 of the Goa Lokayukta Act, 2013.

Now the state Cabinet will recommend name of Justice Mishra to the Governor of Goa for appointment.

2016 World Press Freedom Index released: India ranked 133rd


World Press Freedom Index is published annually by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) since 2002.

It measures the level of freedom available to journalists in 180 countries using the following criteria – pluralism, media independence, media environment and self-censorship, legislative environment, transparency, infrastructure, and abuses.

On 20 April 2016 the 2016 World Press Freedom Index was released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The Index ranks 180 countries according to the freedom allowed journalists. Finland, the Netherlands and Norway occupied the first three places.

India ranked 133 out of the 180 countries.

India ranks low;

  • Because of the number of journalists killed and the impunity for crimes of violence against the media.
  • Frequent lawsuits against journalists by local officials.
  • Frequent verbal and physical violence, attacks by armed groups are on the rise in several states.
  • With almost one attack on a journalist every month and four journalists murdered in 2015, the state of Uttar Pradesh has become one of India’s most dangerous regions.
  • Indian government has made no provision for the creation of a special unit to combat impunity for crimes of violence against journalists.

Beti Bachao Beti Padho Scheme extended to 61 more districts with low Child Sex Ratio


Beti Bachao Beti Padho Scheme (BBBP) was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 22 January 2015.

On 19 April 2016 Union Government extended the Beti Bachao Beti Padho (BBBP) Scheme in additional 61 districts across 11 States and Union Territories. The scheme was extended in the districts with low Child Sex Ratio.

Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi extended the scheme while addressing the function in New Delhi.

The key elements of the scheme include awareness and advocacy campaign, multi-sectoral action and effective enforcement of pre-conception and pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act.

Indian-American Geeta Pasi nominated as US envoy to Chad by Obama


On 19 April 2016 US President Barack Obama nominated Indian-American Geeta Pasi as the country's next envoy to Chad.

Ms Pasi is the Director of the Office of Career Development and Assignments in the Bureau of Human Resources at the Department of State.

Pasi, who served as the US Ambassador to Djibouti from 2011 to 2014, is a career member of the Foreign Service.

President Pranab Mukherjee presented Hindi Sevi Samman Awards


On 19 April 2016 the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee presented the Hindi Sevi Samman Awards for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014. The awards were distributed at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

President Pranab Mukherjee honoured the Chinese professor Ge Fuping with the George Grierson prize for his remarkable works done for the promotion of Hindi abroad.

These Awards were instituted by Central Hindi Institute, Agra in 1989.

Fourteen scholars receive this award in seven different categories every year for their contribution in the field of Hindi language and literature.

Laureus World Sports Awards 2016


On 18 April 2016 Laureus World Sports Awards 2016 were given. The award ceremony was held in Berlin, Germany for the first time.

Tennis player Novak Djokovic of Serbia won the Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award for a third time, whereas US tennis player Serena Williams won the Sportswoman of the Year Award.

India signs MoU with Mauritius to cooperate in Traditional Medicine and Homoeopathy


On 19 April 2016 India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mauritius to promote cooperation in traditional medicine and homeopathy.

The MoU envisages exchange of experts, supply of traditional medicinal substances, joint research and development and recognition of the traditional systems of health and medicine in both countries.

It also aims at promotion and popularization of the various Indian traditional systems which fall under AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa & Homoeopathy).

Maharashtra government banned digging of bore wells beyond 200 ft


On 18 April 2016 Maharashtra government decided to restrict digging of borewells beyond 200 feet. The action was taken to check the steep decline in ground water level in the state.

This decision was taken in the wake for severe water crisis and droughts across various regions in the state.

The ban will be implemented under the Maharashtra Groundwater Development and Management Act in order to control the excess water pumping through borewell.

The violators of the rule would face fine or even imprisonment, as the action will be considered as a punishable offence.

Infosys co-founder launched app ‘Itihaasa’


On 17 April 2016 Infosys co-founder S Gopalakrishnan launched a new app named ‘Itihaasa’ that chronicles Indian IT journey since the 1950s.

The app 'itihaasa' is one of the largest chronicle with 600 videos featuring 44 technology stalwarts.

Through the app users can personalise stories on six dimensions that is;

Time, People, Organisation, Policy, Technical Terms and Place.

Commemorative Coin and Circulation Coin on Tatya Tope


On 18 April 2016 Union Minister for Culture and Tourism and Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma released a Commemorative Coin of 200 rupees and a Circulation Coin of 10 rupees.

Union Government released coin to mark the Martyrdom Day of Tatya Tope.

The Union Ministry celebrated the 200th Birth Anniversary of Tatya Tope in association with State Government of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

14th meeting of Foreign Ministers held in Moscow


On 18 April 2016 the 14th meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Russian Federation, the Republic of India and the People's Republic of China was held in Moscow.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Union Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of India Sushma Swaraj, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China Wang Yi took part in the meeting.

The Ministers discussed various aspects of trilateral cooperation on global and regional issues.

They focused on stepping up efforts to combat international terrorism and the global drug threat.

They also discussed on creating a new security and cooperation architecture in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Ministers decided to hold the next trilateral meeting in India.

Maharashtra Government to use hologram technique to check spurious liquor


On 18 April 2016 the Maharashtra Government decided to use hologram technique on every alcohol bottle manufactured and sold in the state.

To check sale of spurious liquor, the Maharashtra Government has decided to make it mandatory to have a hologram on every alcohol bottle.

The Government decided to paste "polyester base track and trace" hologram on every alcohol bottle. It will be supported by a mobile app, which will help consumers find out whether the liquor is fake or genuine.

This technique will help prevent loss of revenue due to cheap liquor being imported into Maharashtra.

The decision was taken keeping in mind the last year’s tragedy at Malwani where about 100 people died after consuming spurious liquor.

Dipa Karmakar became first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics


Indian artistic gymnast Dipa Karmakar on 17 April 2016 created history by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics.

Karmakar has been listed as the 79th gymnast among individual qualifiers in the list of women’s artistic gymnast who have qualified for the Rio Olympics.

She is also one of the five women that have successfully landed the very difficult Produnova vault in competition, also holding the highest score amongst all in her attempt.

She won a bronze at the Asian Gymnastics Championships and finished fifth at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, both a first for India.

International Day for Monuments and Sites observed with theme "The Heritage of Sport"


International Day for Monuments and Sites traditionally called World Heritage Day was observed across the world on 18 April 2016. This years theme was ‘The Heritage of Sport’.

The theme was decided by the International Council for Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in the light of Olympics 2016 that will be hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August 2016.

World Heritage Day is observed to create awareness to protect and preserve the shared wealth of humankind and showcases the diversity of cultural heritage. It calls for collective efforts of the international community to preserve the valuable asset.

Supercomputer 'Param Kanchenjunga' presented


On 17 April 2016 Sikkim Governor Shrinvas Patil formally presented Supercomputer named ‘Param Kanchenjunga’ at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Sikkim.

It is named after Kangchenjunga Mountain.

The Param Kanchenjunga is the most powerful and fastest among all available supercomputers at the 31 National Institute of Technology's.

It has been jointly developed by Pune-based Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and the NIT Sikkim. The total cost of the Supercomputer is around three crore rupees. READ DETAILS
